Former Finals MVP named 'dream' trade target for Knicks

It's no secret that the New York Knicks have been flirting with the idea of trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Ever since Shams Charania's bombshell report that the two-time league MVP had informed the Milwaukee Bucks that the only other team he would play for was the Knicks, the trade speculation has not stopped.

That includes Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey, who believes Antetokounmpo is a "dream" trade target for New York.

At this point, a midseason trade seems unlikely. The Bucks wouldn't willingly punt on the 2025-26 season, especially after what they did this past offseason to keep their 2021 Finals MVP happy.

But next summer, the door is wide open.

"Now, if Milwaukee did make its superstar available, several teams could bury New York's best offer (it already spent most of its assets in the Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns trades), but Antetokounmpo making it clear he wouldn't sign long-term with anyone but the Knicks could close the gap," wrote Bailey.

"New York could also expand the deal to a three-teamer and hope someone else would give it picks for KAT (which would then be rerouted to Milwaukee). Either way, Antetokounmpo ending up with the Knicks feels like a long shot. But there's enough smoke here to make the mention."

The most likely path to the Greek Freak landing in New York is by a public trade demand and a message to all other interested teams that he won't sign an extension anywhere but with the Knicks.

With Antetokounmpo entering the final year of his deal in 2026-27, no team would risk paying the price just to have him as a one-year rental.

For now, Giannis remains a Buck, but things will certainly get interesting in the summer of 2026.
