The Patriots locked up their All-Pro punt returner and shutdown cornerback.
New England agreed to a three-year contract extension with Marcus Jones, a source confirmed to MassLive. The Patriots made it official on Tuesday afternoon.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport was first to report the news.
The versatile 2022 second-round pick entered the NFL as a punt returner but boasted the ability to play cornerback. Now in 2025, Jones’ defense has been on full display.
Going into New England’s Week 8 win over the Cleveland Browns, Jones allowed three catches on 12 targets for 58 yards at cornerback.
Through eight games this season, Jones has 27 tackles, two interceptions and nine passes defended.
While Jones has settled into being a cornerback for New England, he showed off why he’s an All-Pro punt returner against the Carolina Panthers earlier this season.
With the Panthers up 6-0, Jones — instead of calling for a fair catch — ran 87 yards to give the Patriots a 7-6 lead. Jones then returned another punt in the second quarter, this time for 61 yards to put himself among some solid company.
The cornerback’s second punt return marked the fourth time he went at least 60 yards, which tied Patriots Hall of Fame wide receiver Julian Edelman for most 60-plus-yard punt returns in team history.
Jones believes he’s playing some of the best defense in his career.
“I would say, NFL career – around there, yeah, I would definitely say that,” Jones said. “But my main thing is there’s more plays to be made. Not just for me. Everybody on the team. that’s the main thing.”
