Howe hopes for more Carabao Cup glory

**Eddie Howe**looked back at memorable Carabao Cup adventures for Newcastle United as his team prepare to host **Tottenham**at St. James’ Park in the fourth round of the tournament on Wednesday.

The Toon reached the final of the competition in 2023, losing 2-0 to Man United, reached the quarter-finals in 2024 before a shootout defeat to **Chelsea**after conceding a last minute equaliser, and got their hands on the trophy in 2025 with a 2-1 triumph over league leading **Liverpool**at Wembley.

He hopes for more magical moments on this occasion, but nothing will be given to the team.

“A lot of great experiences this competition for us. As you say, the final [in 2023] was an amazing thing. Still remember vivid memories from that day before the game and then obviously the emotions after the game were mainly negative because I felt we left a little bit on the pitch that day.

“The Chelsea defeat was still painful for me. I felt we had a real chance to win that competition that year, but we put it right and did really well last year. A lot of challenging games. You look back at our fixture list to get to the final. I always say this, it wasn't by luck that we won that competition.

“We had to beat Chelsea during the early rounds and that was a tough game and so on, and of course Arsenal in the semi-final. A lot of great experiences for us which helped us as a team, helped us grow.

“There's a real resolve around the squad to try and [retain it.] When we go back through all the experience we've had in the competition, you realize that the early rounds, and we're still in the early rounds this year, they're so important. And I know it's cliche because it's a knockout competition.

“Of course, they are, but finding a way to get through. And we did that several times in really difficult games where it could have gone either way. Couple of penalty shootouts in there which fell our way. So, however we do it, it's just about getting your name in the hat for the next round. This will be a really tough game tomorrow up against a very good team are in good form away from home.”
