Panthers add Olb off 49ers’ practice squad, waive 2024 draft pick

The Carolina Panthers have added a new pass rusher to their defense ahead of the Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

The Panthers signed outside linebacker Trevis Gipson off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the team waived defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gipson, 28, played in four games for San Francisco this season. He had been with the franchise since August.

The 2020 fifth-round pick has produced 83 tackles,11 sacks, five pass breakups and six forced fumbles during his six-year career. He has appeared in 57 games (19 starts) during that span.

Gipson, who has played for four different teams over the past four years, will likely come in to fill a depth role for the Panthers.

The Panthers lost starter Patrick Jones (back) to injury in the Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. They’ve used practice-squad linebacker Carlos “Boogie” Basham as Jones’ temporary replacement over the past two weeks.

Veteran D.J. Wonnum and rookie Nic Scourton, a second-round pick, have played the bulk of the snaps at the position over the past two weeks. Third-round pick Princely Umanmielen has also chipped in with heavy snaps. Basham and special teams standout Thomas Incoom have been sprinkled into the rotation as well.

Gipson figures to take Basham’s spot in the rotation. Basham is no longer eligible to be elevated from the practice squad for games, so the Panthers needed to sign him to the 53-man roster to put him out on the field on Sundays. For now, Gipson’s arrival appears to be a potential roadblock for Basham’s promotion.

Gipson, who played his college ball at Tulsa, is listed as 6-foot-4 and 263 pounds. He spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears before hopping around the league for one-year stints with the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and 49ers.

Crumedy will be subject to waivers for a second time this season. He was previously waived ahead of Week 1 and put on the practice squad for a short period before re-signing with the 53-man roster. The 6-foot-4, 309-pound lineman played in eight total games for the team over the past two seasons, producing 15 tackles, a QB hit and a half-sack.

If Crumedy clears waivers, as he did earlier in the year, he could return on the practice squad.

The team also made a pair of practice roster moves on Tuesday. They brought back rookie offensive tackle Michael Tarquin and released cornerback Mike Reid from the practice squad. Tarquin was released from the practice squad last week after spending the entire year in Carolina. Reid had been with the team since rookie minicamp in May.
