The New England Patriots found an absolute gem in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL Draft, selecting return specialist and defensive back Marcus Jones 85th overall. He has developed into not only an elite punt returner with two touchdowns, but also a reliable starting slot cornerback. Jones is in the midst of a breakout fourth season, recording six tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, and nine pass deflections, while allowing 282 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an 81.0 passer rating.

Marcus Jones is in the final year of his rookie contract and is scheduled to hit free agency this offseason. Since he is an elite punt returner and a key member of the secondary, it would be logical for the Patriots to extend the All-Pro now rather than risk letting him test the open market. Also, waiting could cause Jones’s asking price to rise, especially if he continues to play at a high level in the slot.

According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Patriots have signed Marcus Jones to a contract extension, locking him up through the 2028 season. The deal is for three years and is worth $36 million. Finally, the team now has its top three cornerbacks secured for at least the next two years, with Christian Gonzalez’s fifth-year option and a contract extension looming.
It’s a 3-year deal worth $36M new money, per me and @TomPelissero. New England keeps a good one home. https://t.co/jWqD9tsH6U
