Forget Joshua Zirkzee: Aston Villa should swerve £37m Man United flop and sign Bundesliga…

Matt Maher analysis as Aston Villa continue Premier League winning run

Aston Villa have the chance to freshen up their ranks when the January transfer window opens up for business

Aston Villa have their sights set on getting back into the Champions League this season. They missed out on the final day of the last campaign and had to settle for the Europa League. Unai Emery’s are having to juggle their domestic duties with European action again this term.

The Midlands outfit won 1-0 at home to Manchester City last time out in an eye-catching result. Matty Cash scored their winner in the first half to help his team secure an impressive three points. Next up is a tricky away trip to Anfield to play Liverpool but they will be in confident mood.

Aston Villa should target Joshua Zirkzee transfer alternative

Step forward Stuttgart ace Ermedin Demirovic, who can play on either flank as well as down the middle. The Bosnia and Herzegovina international, who has 36 caps to his name, has caught the eye in the Bundesliga over recent times. His current club could face a battle to keep hold of him with the way things are going.

Demirovic, 27, moved to MHPArena in July and penned a long-term deal until 2028. He scored 17 goals in all competitions in the last campaign and has already managed to find the net on five occasions this term. The forrward won the DFB-Pokal back in May in Berlin.

He started his career with spells at Hamburg, RB Leipzig, Alaves, Sochaux, Almeria, FC St. Gallen and SC Freiburg before finally settling with Augsburg. The Hamburg-born man found his feet at WWK Arena and was given a platform to consistently show what he can do. He fired 23 goals in 66 matches before earning a transfer to Stuttgart and he hasn’t looked back since.

Why Ermedin Demirovic would suit Aston Villa

Demirovic is a powerful player and his pace would suit Aston Villa’s style of play. He would give Emery more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch and would be ideal competition for the likes of Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen. In addition, he has proved over the past few years that he knows how to score goals over in Germany and he should now test himself in England.

Leeds United were said to be keen on him in the summer, as reported by German news outlet Kicker. The Whites were reportedly interested in a swoop for the player after their promotion from the Championship under Daniel Farke. However, nothing materialised on that front in the end and he remained where he was beyond the deadline.

It remains to be seen whether the West Yorkshire club are still admirers of him. If that is the case, Aston Villa would have to see off competition from elsewhere to land his signature. It also wouldn’t be a surprise to see other teams keeping tabs on his progress either.
