Chiefs SB Champ Suddenly Back on the Market After Release

The Kansas City Chiefs improved to 5-3 for the season with an impressive Monday Night Football win over the Commanders. One of their strengths all season has been the play of their secondary, with the cornerback rotation looking elite with the rise of Nohl Williams and Chris Roland-Wallace adding depth and quality.

Unfortunately, things aren't going as well for a former Chiefs cornerback who played a huge role in their first Super Bowl win of the dynasty era.

Kendall Fuller was just [released by the Detroit Lions less than two weeks](https://detroitjockcity.com/lions-cut-recent-cb-signing-help-on-way-01k8kxy5jzqd) after signing with their practice squad. The 30-year-old wasn't able to suit up for the Lions despite the team desperately needing more bodies in the defensive backfield. The fact that the Lions trusted less-established players like Nick Whiteside and Arthur Maulet to play significant snaps while Fuller wasn't even elevated from the practice squad speaks volumes about where the former Chief currently is as a player.

Ex-Chief Kendall Fuller's NFL Days May Be Coming to an End After Latest Release

Even though Fuller is not the player he once was, this is still a surprising development. He missed six games due to suffering two concussions last season, but was still solid in the 11 games he suited up for with the Dolphins. He had five pass breakups and allowed 62.8% completion in coverage, and received a 66.2 defensive and 62.4 coverage grades on [Pro Football Focus](https://premium.pff.com/nfl/players/2024/REG/kendall-fuller/10718/defense).

Prior to landing in Miami, Fuller was excellent during his time with the Commanders. One would have thought that this would have landed him a new contract in the 2025 offseason, but Fuller had to wait until October to sign a practice squad contract with the Lions. This suggests that there may not be too much interest in the veteran cornerback, and we could see him land on a practice squad somewhere before getting a chance to take the field.

For Chiefs fans, Fuller will always be remembered fondly. Not only for his game-sealing interception in Super Bowl LIV, but also because his arrival kick-started the Patrick Mahomes era as he was acquired from Washington in return for Alex Smith. His tenure in KC could have been longer if the Chiefs weren't outbid by the Commanders in the 2020 offseason, which gave him a four-year, $40 million deal, and GM Brett Veach was never going to re-sign a cornerback for that price.

Where Fuller's career takes him next remains to be seen, but his days as a starting CB and a difference-maker are likely over.
