Report: Pacheco week-to-week due to knee injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco could be missing from action over the next few weeks.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs’ starting running back suffered an MCL sprain on his final carry Monday night during Kansas City’s 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders.

With four minutes left in the game, Pacheco rushed the ball for a nine-yard gain and took a tackle directly to his planted right knee. Video on ESPN’s broadcast showed Pacheco’s knee hyperextending and then Chiefs athletic trainers testing his knee structurally on the sideline after he hobbled off the field.

Pacheco was the Chiefs’ leading rusher on the night, gaining 58 yards on 12 carries in the Chiefs’ fifth win of the season. After the game, head coach Andy Reid said the team would be checking on the status of Pacheco, one of two players he mentioned with injuries.

Pelissero reported that Pacheco’s status is currently week-to-week, putting his availability in question for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game rematch against the Buffalo Bills.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shares his thoughts after the Chiefs' 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders.

If Pacheco is inactive, the Chiefs would be in line to give a greater workload to veteran Kareem Hunt -- who scored two touchdowns in Monday night’s win -- and rookie Brashard Smith. It could also result in the first active game of the season for free agent signee Elijah Mitchell, who has been inactive in each game this season for Kansas City after signing a one-year deal.

Pacheco missed time last year after suffering a fractured fibula on the same leg last season, resulting in an injured reserve stint that caused him to miss half of the 2024 season. The fourth-year running back has 78 carries for 329 yards this season.

The Chiefs and Bills will kick off at 3:25 p.m. CT Sunday on CBS.
