The on-loan [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) striker is out of favour at his Serie A club.
He remained an unused substitute as they won 1-0 at Sassuolo on Sunday to go level on points at the top, despite having scored only eight goals in eight games.
Sources close to Roma appear to be briefing media that Ferguson’s loan could be cut short in January.
Promise David, a Nigerian who plays for Tony Bloom’s Union Saint-Gilloise, is the latest player being linked with Roma.
Albion boss Faban Hurzeler says he is following loan players closely and that patience is required with them.
But, asked whether Roma should be patient with Ferguson, who has yet to score for them, he said: “I’m not there so I can't say what exactly is going on and how the conditions are there and why it is like this.
“But I think for him personally, it's really overcoming these phases, try to avoid the noise, what I always say, try to focus on the things he can influence.
“That's just like being a good team-mate, training as hard as possible every day and, even though I didn't play on that level, I know how hard it is when you have like a bad phase.
“When you have like not the game time you might want, when you get criticised from outside, then it doesn't help you progressing.
“But, if you really can stop this noise, if you really can focus on your inner circle, on the things you can influence in the gym, on the things you can influence on the training ground, that that's the only thing you can do.
“I think long term, I always say, work pays off.
“If you work hard, if you have the right passion for it, then long term you will get what you deserve.
“And that's what I just can say to to all the young players.
“Overcome these phases and you will get strong and stronger.”
Ferguson’s fellow striker Mark O’Mahony is also struggling to make an impact after going on loan to Reading.
Hurzeler said: “They are both good personalities, good fighters.
“Of course it’s not easy, especially for Evan having to go into another culture, a completely different style of football.
“So I think we need to be patient with him. He's still very young, he needs to adapt.”
