Chelsea leading race to sign Ligue 1 full-back

Chelsea tuen their attention to the Carabao Cup pn Wednesday as they visit Wolves.

The Blues suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, despite Alejandro Garnacho having put the hosts in front early on at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Mareaca’s side have now fallen down to ninth place in the Premier League table, and the ex-Leicester City boss will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways at Molineux.

Chelsea could be boosted by the return of striker Liam Delap, although Maresca has suggested that the Englishman isn’t ready to play the entirety of Wednesday’s game.

Away from the action, it also appears that the London side are plotting a January move for a new signing to provide cover for another player that has struggled with injuries.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are hoping to sign full-back Guela Doue from French side Strasbourg in January.

The report claims that the Blues are keen to bolster Maresca’s squad with a new right-back, amid concerns about captain Reece James’ injury record.

The England international has endured a horrific injury record over the past few seasons, although he has remained fit for the entirety of the current season so far.

Doue, 23, joined Strasbourg from fellow French side Rennes in 2024 and has since played more than 40 times for his current club, who are part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea.

Several players – including Mike Penders, Andrey Santos and Ben Chilwell – have moved between the two clubs over the past few years, and the report suggests that Chelsea are in pole position to add Doue to that list.

Chelsea do currently have Frenchman Malo Gusto as cover for James, but the ex-Lyon man has struggled to find his best form so far this term and was sent off against Nottingham Forest earlier this month.
