The Denver Broncos received a welcome dose of optimism Tuesday when they decided against placing cornerback Pat Surtain II on injured reserve. The same held true for tight end Nate Adkins, who’s dealing with a knee issue.
Players moved to IR typically must sit out at least four games before returning. With Denver’s bye week looming, that timeline could have stretched to nearly five weeks. By avoiding the move, the Broncos are signaling confidence that Surtain could return before Nov. 30.

That belief became even stronger Wednesday when NFL Insider Ian Rapoport provided an encouraging update for the organization and its fanbase.
“The Broncos are not planning to place reigning DPOY Pat Surtain II on Injured Reserve, source said, and it’s possible that he only misses 3 games with his pec strain,” Rapoport shared on X.

The injury situation makes Denver’s recent defensive performance even more impressive. During their last outing against Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and an offensive line featuring three first-round picks, the Broncos dealt with significant adversity.
Surtain went down with an ankle injury on the opening drive, returned briefly, then exited again before halftime with a pectoral problem.

Despite losing their reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Denver’s defense continued to dominate. They’ve arguably been the league’s best unit through the early season. The aggressive pass rush combined with sticky man coverage has been relentless.

Denver ranks second in Cover 0 usage at seven percent and fourth in Cover 1 at 32 percent, reflecting defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s fearless approach. The real question now becomes how Joseph and his group will adapt without their star corner for this crucial stretch.
This period could define Denver’s push to challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for the division crown and secure a home playoff game. It might also strengthen Joseph’s case for another head-coaching opportunity.
