NFL: Report card grades in the NFC East for week 8

The NFC East has become a one-team division again as the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) are the only team above .500 through eight weeks. The Cowboys (3-4-1), Commanders (3-5), and Giants (2-6) all lost this week, and widened the gap between them and the Eagles. Let’s take a look at how each team graded out in Week 8.

Week 8 Overall Grade: A

The Eagles avenged their Week 6 loss to the New York Giants well as they won 38-20 in Philadelphia. The Eagles played well on offense despite not having A.J. Brown available due to a hamstring injury, while their defense held the Giants mainly in check.

Week 8 Offensive Grade: A

The Eagles offense has looked much better over their past two games and built on last week with 427 yards on the day against the Giants. Jalen Hurts threw for four touchdowns, while both Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby rushed for over 100 yards. Keeping Saquon Barkley back on track will be key for the Eagles moving forward.

Week 8 Defensive Grade: B+

The Eagles defense held the Giants to just 246 yards on the day, but they still gave up 20 points, so we’ll keep them out of the A-range this week. The Giants lost Cam Skattebo from the rushing attack, but still only managed 68 rushing yards on the day.

Week 8 Overall Grade: D

The Cowboys have been a mercurial team this season, and Sunday’s blowout loss to the Broncos (after blowing out the Commanders) was more of the same. The Cowboys still sit just a half game under .500, so there’s a lot of season left to change their fortunes. But they haven’t won two games in a row, so they’ll need to turn things around quickly.

Dallas Cowboys Week 8 Offensive Grade: D

It was NOT a good day for the Cowboys offense as they faced a tough Broncos defense. Dak Prescott only threw for 188 yards while Javonte Williams rushed for just 41 yards. George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb still had productive days, but this was a game to forget for the Cowboys offense.

Dallas Cowboys Week 8 Defensive Grade: D

It’s hard to get much better than a D when you give up over 400 yards of total offense for the day, so here we are. Bo Nix lit up the Cowboys for four passing touchdowns, and this is now the second time in the last six games that the Cowboys have allowed 40-plus points.

Washington Commanders

Week 8 Overall Grade: D

The Commanders played a tough first half, but very essentially listless after halftime. While they went into the locker room tied 7-7 with the Chiefs, Washington didn’t do anything in the second half and lost 28-7 as they now fall to 3-5 on the season.

Week 8 Offensive Grade: D

It’s tough to do much when you don’t have your star quarterback, and the Commanders did exactly that on Monday Night Football. They managed just 246 yards of offense on the night, and that translated to just seven points on the evening. The Commanders really need Jayden Daniels back.

Week 8 Defensive Grade: D

The Chiefs had 28 points on the night, but it could have been a lot more as Patrick Mahomes threw two interceptions early and the Chiefs took their foot off the gas pedal late. With 432 yards of total offense allowed, the Commanders defense falls squarely in the D range.

New York Giants

Week 8 Overall Grade: D

For as excited as the Giants were after they beat the Eagles in Week 6 (and rightfully so!), they’re feeling just as dejected after losing 38-20 to Philadelphia in Week 8. They also will be without Cam Skattebo for the rest of the season (after losing Malik Nabers in Week 4), so there’s not much for Giants Nation to look forward to with the 2-6 start.

Week 8 Offensive Grade: D

Jaxson Dart played well enough on Sunday, but the Giants managed just 246 total yards on the day and allowed five sacks. They also had a tough time running the ball after Cam Skattebo went down with a gruesome ankle injury and only put up 68 rushing yards on the day.

Week 8 Defensive Grade: D-

The Giants defense couldn’t do anything well on Sunday as they allowed 427 yards of total offense on the day, while also allowing two 100-yard rushers. They held the Eagles to just 151 passing yards, but that also included four touchdown passes from Jalen Hurts, so we can’t give them much credit there.
