Giants Get Cam Skattebo Return Update After Surgery for Brutal Injury

The New York Giants received a devastating blow to their offense with the loss of Cam Skattebo in Week 8. Skattebo suffered a nasty injury in his team’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, requiring him to be carted off the field and receive an evaluation.

The injury, initially believed to be Skattebo’s ankle, occurred when Zack Braun tackled him. That season-ending injury required surgery for the Giants’ rookie this week, and now further details have arrived about what injuries he sustained and when he should return.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport indicated (via sources) that Skattebo suffered an ankle dislocation as well as a fibula fracture and deltoid ligament rupture. In addition to reporting that surgery was successful in closing the wound, Rapoport said the team expects Skattebo to return for their offseason program.

While that won’t help the Giants this season, it gives the team encouragement for next season, when they get the star RB back in the lineup. Currently, the New York Giants are 2-6 and fourth in the NFC East, a division that clearly favors the Philadelphia Eagles.

Before Skattebo’s injury, he led the team with 410 rushing yards on 101 carries. Skattebo also had five touchdowns in his rookie season. The Giants’ rookie was one of the team’s bright spots alongside young quarterback Jaxson Dart, who clearly was shaken up after seeing his friend and teammate go down.

"I was devastated. That's my boy, man. Seeing him go down and obviously reacting to what happened. It just sucks. It's the worst part of this game," Dart told reporters after Sunday's game.

The rookie running back also reacted to all the love and support he received from friends, fans, and teammates. In an update posted on his X page, Skattebo said surgery was a success and thanked the doctors, surgeons, and staff for doing their “best work” on him.

“This is just the beginning of my journey and I can't wait to show you guys all about it!!!” he wrote in an encouraging message about his recovery and rehabilitation process.

With Skattebo out, the Giants will rely on Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary for their ground game. They'll host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday as they attempt to bounce back from the adversity of losing one of their popular young stars for the season.
