Watch out Malick Thiaw after West Ham vs Newcastle United decision is made official

The referee has been announced for Newcastle United’s Premier League game against West Ham United on Sunday.

The Magpies are travelling to the capital for the first time this season, as Eddie Howe aims to secure back-to-back Premier League wins. That is something that Newcastle United have not done since the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

They will not get a better opportunity, coming up against a West Ham side who are in desperately poor form. The Hammers, now managed by Nuno Espirito Santo, start the weekend in 19th place, having won just one game.

Newcastle United will hope that remains the same after Sunday, while they will also hope there are no major refereeing controversies.

Rob Jones to referee West Ham vs Newcastle United after missing Malick Thiaw red card

The Premier League have confirmed the officials for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, with Rob Jones to referee West Ham vs Newcastle United at the London Stadium.

Peter Bankes is on VAR duty, having overseen Newcastle’s win over Fulham on Saturday. He was not popular inside St James’ Park, with multiple contentious decisions going against Eddie Howe’s side.

In terms of referee Rob Jones, this is the second time this season that he will officiate a Toon game. The first was the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth in August.

That was an uncomfortable afternoon for Jones, who got a couple of major decisions wrong. Nick Woltemade should have won a penalty after being pulled down in the box, while a bigger mistake came at the other end of the pitch.

Malick Thiaw should have been sent off for two yellow cards, but was spared the embarrassment by Jones.

In response to the defender avoiding an obvious second booking, Eddie Howe quickly took Malick Thiaw out of the firing line and replaced him with Jamaal Lascelles.

Rob Jones’ record refereeing Newcastle United

When Rob Jones referees Newcastle United, they usually win.

He has been the referee for the Magpies on 16 separate occasions across three different competitions. Newcastle have won nine of those games, losing four and drawing three.

Jones is clearly a good omen for Eddie Howe’s side, who will go all out to secure just their fourth Premier League win of the season on Sunday at West Ham’s expense.
