Analyst says Eagles are indirectly “shopping” A.J. Brown

The Philadelphia Eagles remain one of the best teams in the NFL after winning Super Bowl LIX in February. After two consecutive losses in Weeks 5 and 6, the Eagles bounced back with back-to-back wins to improve to 6-2 following a commanding 38-20 victory over the New York Giants.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown didn’t play in Sunday’s game, with DeVonte Smith taking over and leading the team in yards receiving (84). Many overlooked Brown’s absence against the Giants, but analyst Mike Florio believes that was a strategy from the Eagles.

The veteran speculated about Philadelphia shopping Brown without necessarily telling everybody they are trying to move on from him.

“There was a report over the weekend that the Eagles are not expected to trade wide receiver A.J. Brown. That was the headline. When you look a little deeper, it sure looks like the Eagles are willing, if not eager, to get phone calls about A.J. Brown,” Florio said. “That was going in the Sunday’s game. A game in which Saquon Barkley erupted for his best game of the season and A.J. Brown did not play. I’ve heard of several teams that are interested (in Brown). This, to me, feels like an effort by the Eagles to shop A.J. Brown without shopping A.J. Brown.”

Florio added that the Eagles appear to be waiting for calls from other teams instead of them being the ones calling teams to offer them Brown. He mentioned the New England Patriots as a potential landing spot for the wide receiver, emphasizing that his former coach, Mike Vrabel, now leads the AFC East squad.

Brown joined the Eagles in 2022 after spending the first three seasons of his career with the Tennessee Titans. In 54 games with Philadelphia, he has recorded 290 catches for 4,426 yards and 28 touchdowns.

He has expressed his frustrations with the lack of targets and production he’s experienced in he last two seasons, and this situation appears to be reaching its boiling point. The trade deadline is less than a week away, and the Eagles could use Brown to add draft capital, Florio suggested.
