The full scale of Cam Skattebo's gruesome season-ending injury has been confirmed, with the New York Giants star suffering more damage than initially reported.
The rookie running back was carted off in the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He fought for a Jaxson Dart pass with Eagles' linebacker Zach Baun, and his ankle buckled upon landing.

It was immediately apparent that the former Arizona State Sun Devil had suffered a major injury, and his teammates were left devastated. The reaction of both quarterback Dart on the field and Tom Brady in the FOX Sports both spoke volumes.

After the game, it was confirmed that Skattebo had suffered a dislocated ankle, and he had been taken to a Philadelphia hospital for surgery.
However, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reports that doctors discovered that the 23-year-old had suffered more damage, fracturing his fibula and rupturing his deltoid ligament.
Rapoport reports that the surgery was a success, and Skattebo faces a six-month rehab program, meaning he could be healthy to participate in the Giants' OTAs in the spring.

Skattebo's impressive rookie season finishes with 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns, plus 207 receiving yards with two scores.
In addition to making a positive impact with his play, Skattebo has been part of a Giants rookie class that has reenergized the fanbase, even if the team has slumped to 2-6 on the season.
Skattebo, Dart, and pass rusher Abdul Carter have all performed strongly, inspiring hope that better times await for a fanbase that has endured seven losing seasons in the past eight years.
Fourth-round pick Skattebo's injury has undoubtedly dampened the optimism, but he has made clear that he is confident that he can return better than ever.

"Thank you everyone for the support! Surgery went well," he posted on social media. "I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me.
"Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way. Thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me.
"This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it! GOD has a plan for me, stick the course and it will all work itself out. Be right back."
Head coach Brian Daboll is under no illusions, though. He knows that plenty of hard work awaits Skattebo if he is to get back on the field.

"He's got a road ahead of him," Daboll told reporters on Monday. "I'm not going to get into the particulars, but [surgery] all went well. He's recovering, and obviously he'll be missed, but on the road to recovery."
