Ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 9 matchup against the NFL’s best team in the Indianapolis Colts, they are dealing with quite a few injuries to key personnel, namely standout safety DeShon Elliott, leading to him landing on injured reserve Tuesday evening.
The Steelers aren’t alone in dealing with injuries. The Colts are banged up, too, entering the Week 9 matchup on the North Shore. Last week against the Tennessee Titans, the Colts were without three players in cornerback Jaylon Jones, defensive end Samson Ebukam, and defensive end Tyquan Lewis.
At the start of this work week, nine Colts players did not practice Wednesday, one of which was a veteran rest day, while one other player missed due to personal reasons.
The Colts released their first injury report of the week just moments ago on X.

After missing Jones last week in a blowout win over the Titans, seeing him return to practice in full capacity is a nice boost for Indianapolis defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
Jones started the season on IR due to the hamstring injury, but he had his 21-day window opened on Oct. 22, so there is a possibility he’ll be able to go Sunday. If he does, it would be a big boost to a Colts secondary that is in need of some help. Last season, Jones started all 17 games, intercepted two passes and allowed a QB rating against of just 86.0.
The Colts previously put Chavarius Ward on injured reserve and lost third-round pick Justin Walley for the season in training camp. Not to mention, standout slot corner Kenny Moore II is dealing with an Achilles injury, so Jones’ return would be a huge boost.
Lewis remaining out of practice Wednesday along with Samson Ebukam is a concern for the Colts up front. Lewis has three sacks this season and has been a nice rotational player in the trenches. With the Steelers potentially starting backup left guard Spencer Anderson this week in place of the injured Isaac Seumalo, getting Lewis back on the interior would be a nice addition for the Colts from a pass-rush perspective.
Wide receivers Josh Downs and Anthony Gould missing practice Wednesday is notable, as Downs is a dependable slot option for the Colts and has been a consistent weapon in recent years. Last season against the Steelers, Downs had eight receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown as Pittsburgh really struggled to deal with him. Gould is the speed option who has largely replaced Adonai Mitchell in recent weeks after Mitchell’s ball-security mistake against the Los Angeles Rams.
Offensive lineman Matt Goncalves, a former Pittsburgh Panthers standout, missed practice Wednesday for personal reasons after announcing on Instagram that his father passed away Tuesday morning.
#Colts RG Matt Goncalves just shared via IG that his father, William, died.
“Not enough can be said about the father you were to me and my brothers. The impact you made on our lives will stick with us till we meet again. Rest In Peace Dad. Goncalves Strong. Always ❤️💪🏼” pic.twitter.com/XxpAUXixnc

Goncalves played in 36 games at Pitt, starting 24 games. He was a team captain for the Panthers and was a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s started all seven Colts games this season at right guard, playing all 436 snaps.
