The hits just keep coming for the Dallas Mavericks (1-3).
Reports emerged on Tuesday that backup point guard Brandon Williams was arrested at on Saturday at Terminal C of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
WFAA, the local ABC affiliate, got hold of an arrest report that reportedly states that “Williams attempted to go through TSA at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when personnel located a black container in his bag that contained 1.585 ounces of marijuana. Williams told authorities that his manager had packed his bag. Officers arrested Williams around 10:02 a.m. and charged him with possession of marijuana, and he was taken to jail without incident.”
Williams was granted leave by the team to attend to a personal matter before the game against Toronto. He is currently listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers, as of Tuesday’s 4:30 p.m. (EDT) league injury report.
With Dante Exum and Kyrie Irving out to start the season, Williams was expected to play a role as a backup point guard to start the year after breaking out last season during a bad injury stretch while a two-way player. He earned a two-year, $2.3-million contract with the Mavericks after stepping up last season. With Williams out, D’Angelo Williams has been the Mavericks’ best option at point guard, while rookie Cooper Flagg has also picked up some of the ball-handling slack on the suddenly thin Dallas roster.
According to a social media post from Williams, a close friend and former high school teammate, Kyle Owens, passed away from leukemia on Sept. 30, the same day the Mavericks started their training camp in Vancouver, BC. Williams and Owens played together at Crespi Carmelite High School in California.
The Mavs just haven’t been able to get out of their own way to start the season, on or off the court,
