Pep Guardiola made 10 changes for the trip to Wales and it was the hosts who raced into a 12th minute lead at the Swansea.com stadium, with Goncalo Franco curling in superbly from 20 yards.
We dominated possession and almost levelled after 38 minutes following fine work on the right flank by Oscar Bobb, who cut the ball across for Cherki, but his poked effort crashed off the post.
A minute later, we were level through the electric Jeremy Doku, whose powerful effort deflected off Cameron Burgess and flew into the net.
We had the momentum and almost completed the turnaround before the interval, but Marmoush’s driven strike was spectacularly cleared off the line.
Our attacking intensity resumed after the break, with Marmoush drilling wide, Bobb seeing a brace of efforts well blocked and Rayan Ait-Nouri striking over from 15 yards all before the hour mark.
With just under 15 minutes left to play, we made our domination count and took the lead through a thunderous strike from Marmoush, who latched onto Cherki’s pass to spin and rifle into the roof of the net.
With the clock ticking into stoppage time, Cherki got the goal that his display deserved, coolly slotting into the bottom right corner with his left foot to secure our place in the quarter-finals.
