Eagles Made Trade for CB at the Perfect Time

The Philadelphia Eagles are entering their bye week, but they decided to make an addition to the secondary. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Eagles are acquiring CB Michael Carter II and a 2027 7th-round pick from the New York Jets for WR John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

The Eagles desperately needed more bodies in the secondary, and adding Carter II now during the bye gives them the time to get him up to speed in the scheme and allow him to play in Week 10 against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

Eagles Trade for CB Michael Carter II During Their Bye Week

The Eagles have made it known they were considering moving Cooper DeJean to the outside and with this trade, that decision becomes more likely. According to The Athletic's

Zach Berman, Carter II has played 85% of his career reps at slot corner, meaning that DeJean could bump to the boundary.

The Eagles have struggled on the outside, as they've rotated Kelee Ringo and Adoree Jackson. Neither player has played well enough to feel confident moving forward with either guy playing significant reps.

The New York Jets have a new coaching staff looking to revamp that team, leading them to trade for Jarvis Brownlee Jr. He quickly took over in the slot there as Carter II dealt with a concussion, opening the door for the Jets to move on. Joe Douglas, Eagles Senior Personnel Director, was the GM who drafted Carter II, so there was certainly some push from him to bring Carter II over.

Philadelphia is getting a defender who has 223 total tackles, 26 pass deflections, and two interceptions. He owns a high football IQ and is a player who should improve the Eagles' secondary. His name has been in trade talks for a while now, and Philadelphia was always a great landing spot.

Carter has two seasons with a coverage grade of 71.2 or better on Pro Football Focus. The Eagles have two young CBs in Quinyon Mitchell and DeJean, whom they have the utmost confidence in. They need another defender who could be a staple force, and Carter II has the potential to do so.

The Duke product wanted to come to Philadelphia so bad that he agreed to give up the $5 million guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to get the trade done, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

It's a quick trip down from New Jersey to Philadelphia, and the Eagles will waste no time getting Carter II acclimated to their scheme so he can be ready to roll in Week 10 and beyond.
