'Threw in the towel' - Slot told he's 'asking for trouble' as Liverpool suffer 91-year low

Liverpool's problems went from bad to worse as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

The Reds have now lost six of their last seven games in all competitions, and the loss is the first time in 91 years they've lost by that scoreline in a domestic cup match at Anfield.

Jamie O'Hara calls out Arne Slot for his lineup against Crystal Palace as Liverpool get KNOCKED out!

Arne Slot elected to make a whole host of changes and handed two debuts to Freddie Woodman and Kieran Morrison.

On the bench, he didn't have any of his stars to call on, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Hugo Ekitike rested.

Slot decided to take off Alexis Mac Allister and Andy Robertson off at 2-0 down.

Meanwhile, one of the players who came on, Amara Nallo, made some unwanted Liverpool history.

He became the first player in the club's existence to be sent off in back-to-back matches.

The 18-year-old was also dismissed against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last season in what was his only other senior appearance for Liverpool.

But it was another night to forget for Liverpool, and Jamie O'Hara feels like Slot gave up.

"He threw in the towel," O'Hara said during a chat with Dean Saunders on the Sports Bar.

And Saunders, a former Liverpool player, wasn't happy with what he saw on Wednesday night.

"He's asking for trouble picking a team like that. As soon as I saw the team, two thoughts came into my head: They're either trying to get out of the Cup or looking ahead to the next five games.

"Villa at home, Real Madrid at home, Man City, Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven... so maybe he's looking ahead and thinking, 'that's what matters.'

"The bench tells me everything. Arsenal had a stocked up bench in case things went wrong.

"Jurgen Klopp did this in an FA Cup tie against Wolves a few years back but normally he'll have Salah and the best players on the bench... Palace are a good team and you're basically playing the under-23s against them."

Ismaila Sarr scored twice for the Eagles to put them 2-0 up at half time.

Incredibly, they were the sixth and seventh times in his career he's bagged against the Reds having faced them on nine occasions.

It is also the third time in three different competitions that Palace have beaten Liverpool this season having lost to them in the Premier League as well as the Community Shield.

The Eagles love playing Liverpool, and the away end serenaded Slot with chants of 'sacked in the morning'.

And after the game, Slot suggested a congested fixture schedule was the reason behind his decision to field a youthful line-up.

The only recognised first-team players in the XI were Mac Allister, Milos Kerkez and Robertson.

Slot said: "I think people who know this club and followed this club know that in this competition we use this for our younger players.

"That is one of the reasons. The other reason is we have only four of five injuries, but I have to play the same players.

"There are multiple reasons why we have lost so many games. With all the reasons, there is still no excuse to lose so many.

"If we keep playing the same players like I tried with Alexander Isak, players who have missed out on pre-season. It's another risk of getting an injury."

The Dutchman also highlighted the lack of squad depth.

The Reds do have a few injuries with Alexander Isak, Ryan Gravenberch and Giovanni Leoni all injured.

But they still left Conor Bradley, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Jeremie Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike out of the squad.

How did the game go down?

Palace opened the scoring in the first half as Sarr pounced on a loose ball to rifle into the bottom corner.

Sarr and Yeremy Pino then combined for a stunning goal as the former backheeled into the path of the Spaniard, who fed the Senegalese forward in the box.

He opened up his body and curled home.

That made it 2-0 at half time before Liverpool went down to ten men.

Pino then get on the scoresheet to prompt a mass exodus of Anfield.

Palace will face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the next round, and Liverpool take on Aston Villa in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday evening, live on talkSPORT.
