Arsenal’s win over Brighton had plenty of bright spots for some stars who haven’t had quite as much game time this season.
Mikel Arteta rang the changes, and while it ended with the Gunners booking their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, there were some issues in the overall performance.
The absence of Declan Rice in particular pointed to one issue for Arsenal, and outlines exactly why they are working hard to seal a new contract for the star.

Arsenal midfield issues prove why new Declan Rice contract is needed
Since Declan Rice signed for Arsenal, the midfielder has moved from strength to strength, consistently performing at a high level.
The England international has shown everything, from attacking quality to defensive discipline, with some leadership thrown into the mix.
Given his importance, Arteta decided against starting Rice in the Carabao Cup as part of a much-changed team.
Some of that reflected in the performance, which had plenty of bright sparks, but there was far less control.
The first half, in particular, had moments where Brighton found it far too easy to hit the Gunners on counter-attack by cutting through the midfield.
It’s not always clear to see what is missing until it’s gone, but Rice’s ability to break up attacks was clearly a big miss.
It left Arsenal a bit fortunate not to be behind at the break, after a few squandered opportunities for the Seagulls.
That in itself proved just how important the 26-year-old is to the team, and shows exactly why the club are pushing to seal a new contract for him.
Rice still has three years remaining on his contract, but with the best years of his career still to come after his rise in the team, the form must be rewarded with a deal.
With a return to the team expected over the weekend, there is an expectation that the control will also return in the midfield.

Mikel Arteta keen to protect Declan Rice for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he is willing to protect Declan Rice, given his importance to this Arsenal team.
The midfielder has been rested for both Carabao Cup games so far this season, playing just 22 minutes of action.
That comes with increased depth, with the signings of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard helping to bolster those options, as well as trust in the squad.
With recent injury concerns for Rice, the midweek rest will come as a boost as attention turns back towards the Premier League.
