Tyreek Hill leg injury: Revisiting gruesome incident that is putting Dolphin star's NFL future in question

The Miami Dolphins have had to play the majority of the 2025 season without their best wide receiver. Tyreek Hill suffered a season-ending injury in Week 4 against the New York Jets.

Hill, 31, was sidelined for the remainder of the season, and the degree of the injury caused many to wonder if he would be forced to hang up his cleats for good. The wide receiver is under contract through the 2026 season and will turn 32 years old before the season begins.

Given his age and the fact that Hill's strongest asset is his speed, the injury could not only have been a season-ending, but also career-ending for the speedy pass catcher.

Here is a look back at Hill's season-ending injury.

What happened to Tyreek Hill?

Hill and the Dolphins were playing the Jets in Week 4 of the 2025 season. With about 13:30 left in the third quarter, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw to the right sideline, targeting Hill.

The wide receiver caught the pass before instantly getting tackled while going out of bounds. When Hill was tackled, his leg got caught in the turf, while the other was twisted by the tackler. It resulted in a dislocated knee and torn ligaments.

Is Tyreek Hill out for the season?

Yes. Hill was ruled out almost instantly for the remainder of the game. Further examination showed that the wide receiver not only dislocated his knee but also tore several ligaments.

While details haven't been made public, the assumption is that Hill tore his ACL and may have also torn his MCL and/or his PCL.

Tyreek Hill dislocated knee recovery timeline

Hill's recovery timeline is tough to determine fully. In general, a dislocated knee can vary depending on severity. It can be anywhere from two months to more than six months. That is just in general and doesn't include having to ramp up athletic activity to play professional football. Add in the torn ligaments, and Hill could be looking at a nine or 10-month recovery timeline.

The uncertain recovery timeline is partially why many are wondering if Hill will retire. If he doesn't, he is expected back for the 2026 regular season, barring any setbacks.

Will Tyreek Hill retire?

Not yet. Hill said on an appearance on former teammate Terron Armstead's podcast that he is considering it, but has not made a decision.

"At the end of the day, I feel like that decision is based upon how I feel and where my mindset is at the moment. I'm happy with the career that I've had. I love playing football. I love it, but it takes a lot. It takes a lot on you mentally, it takes a lot on you physically. I'm at the point now where I need to have a conversation with mom, family, everybody. Wherever my mind is at the time, the decision will be made, but I know right now, I haven't had time to live in the moment."

Hill will have plenty of time to think about it while he rehabs his knee and tries to get ready for the 2026 season if he does keep playing.
