What has most pleased Howe about star who was 'desperate' for Newcastle transfer

Ramsdale joined Newcastle from Southampton on a season-long loan move but hasn't yet played a minute in the Premier League or Champions League, with his only outings coming in the Carabao Cup.

But the former Arsenal goalkeeper showed his class in the win over Tottenham on Wednesday night, making a string of important and impressive saves on the way to keeping an excellent clean sheet. His best save came in the second half when he denied Pape Sarr.

And while Howe knows Ramsdale will of course want to play more football, he says the 27-year-old's attitude has been exemplary since his arrival on Tyneside.

"He was very good tonight," said Howe after Newcastle set-up a quarter-final date against Fulham at St James' Park with a 2-0 win over Spurs.

"I was really pleased with the big save he made in the second half, I thought that was an outstanding save and he showed his agility and power.

"He distributed the ball really well, that's one of his big strengths.

"We've known Aaron for a long time. The big thing for him coming to this club was he wanted to come. He was desperate to join us and he's acted that way ever since.

"There's been no hint of frustration or negativity the fact he's not played as much as he'd want to. Of course he wants to play more. But he's supported Nick really well. He's been really positive, his energy has been really good around the group.

"He's focused on his training and his work with the goalkeeper coaches which has been excellent. He then produces a performance like he did tonight. A really big moment for him, I'm delighted for him."

Newcastle's star performer on Wednesday night was Sandro Tonali, who returned to the starting XI after his recent illness.

Howe said: “I thought he was excellent today. He was full of energy, outstanding both in and out of possession, so I'm very pleased for Sandro.

“He had a nasty illness, actually, and it knocked him a little bit. But he was very honest about initially saying he couldn't perform for the team, so we left him out and today was the right time to bring him back in and he looked 100 per cent fit. I was delighted with his performance."

Tonali's efforts caught up with him in the final minutes, but Howe played down any concerns.

He said: "He's fine, it was just a little bit of cramp.

"I think that shows, Sandro is super fit, but when you miss training for a couple of days due to his illness it goes to show how finely tuned this athletes are. But no problems."
