Contact initiated to sign Leeds United player in January – 2 clubs making attempts

Club Brugge have joined Anderlecht in the race to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

That’s according to Voetbal Krant, who cover the Jupiler Pro League rivals’ interest and Leeds United’s stance.

Earlier this week, Voetbal Nieuws reported Anderlecht are hoping to sign the Leeds United player for a bargain deal in January. It was suggested they have to be creative to be able to make the operation financially affordable.

The stopper, who had been a regular, lost his place at Elland Road this season.

Meslier is yet to make an appearance as Daniel Farke favoured Karl Darlow and summer signing Lucas Perri ahead of him. He’s also in his final year of contract.

Taking these factors into account, the report states the 25-year-old’s time at Leeds United is ‘coming to an end’. His situation with the Whites has seen several clubs take notice and this includes Anderlecht and Club Brugge.

Voetbal Krant make it clear it’s their own update and report that the two Belgian clubs have made approaches for him. It’s not specified whether they contacted Meslier’s camp, Leeds United or both.

It’s ‘not an easy proposition’ for Anderlecht and Club Brugge to take him away from Leeds United in January.

Standard Liège showed interest in the Frenchman last summer but backed down because of the price. The outlet explain this would also be a problem for Anderlecht and Club Brugge, without mentioning figures.

Meslier’s price can only be a problem in the winter market as he’ll be available for free next summer.
