Chelsea striker Liam Delap will be suspended for the Premier League match against Tottenham after being sent off against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

That is because red cards in the Premier League and EFL Cup carry over to a team's next match.

In the FA Cup, red card suspensions are exclusive to that competition.

Yellow card suspensions in the EFL Cup are also served in that competition only and not carried over to the Premier League or FA Cup.

Delap, who made his first appearance in almost two months during Chelsea's 4-3 win at Molineux, featured as a second-half substitute.

The former Ipswich striker was shown two yellow cards in a matter of minutes prior to being shown a red card - the sixth Chelsea player and coaching staff member to be sent off in their last nine matches.

In the third round, Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike also received a red card and was forced to miss the Reds' Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, who also featured as a substitute in the second half, picked up a suspension for his second yellow card of the season in the EFL Cup.

That means Cucurella will miss the trip to Cardiff City in the quarter-finals of the competition, due to yellow card suspensions being competition-specific.
