Estêvão has made it clear that he wants to be known for his own game, not as a copy of anyone else. The Chelsea teenager, one of Brazil’s brightest young talents, spoke openly about the nickname that has followed him since childhood. And why he never liked it.
Speaking toBrazilian media, the 18-year-old admitted he was often called “Messinho” (*“Little Messi”)*in his early years. Mostly because of his dribbling skills and low centre of gravity.
“They called me ‘Messinho’ when I was a kid. That wasn’t something I liked, because I always tried to be called Estêvão,” said the Chelsea forward.
The label first appeared while he played for Cruzeiro’s youth teams and continued during his time at Palmeiras. Even after his £52m move to Chelsea, many fans and journalists still use it when referring to him.
Estêvão accepts that comparisons will always exist, but he insists on building his own path. His performances in the Premier League and Champions League already show a confident player with a unique style, not a copy of anyone else.
The teenager’s stance shows maturity well beyond his age. Chelsea have a gem on their hands.
