Jamie Gittens opens up about his first Chelsea goal

Jamie Gittens put in his best performance in a Chelsea shirt on Wednesday night in the League Cup game against Wolves.

The young winger overcame a timid start to life at Stamford Bridge to deliver a statement performance against a struggling Wolves side.

Gittens’ display helped Chelsea edge out Wolves 4-3 in a dramatic win in the Carabao Cup, and their reward is a trip to League One side Cardiff City in the quarter-finals.

Gittens was the star of the show for Chelsea, scoring once and assisting twice.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea supporters certainly enjoyed Gittens’ performance on the left wing, where he tormented the Wolves backline.

It was his memorable goal with a half-volley from outside the box that was the icing on the cake, though.

What did Jamie Gittens say about his first goal for Chelsea?

After the win against Wolves, Chelsea attacker Gittens admitted he only took the shot to score in the 89th minute because he was tired.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Gittens said, “I just thought I would try and shoot because I was tired, and it went in off the post.

“There were lots of emotions in the celebrations. Of course, I would’ve wanted to score earlier [in my Chelsea career], but it’s happened now and I thank God that I have scored today, and I hope there are many more to come.”

The good thing about Gittens’ performance against Wolves is that it comes hot on the heels of a fine display against Ajax in the Champions League last week.

Even though it’s taken a couple of months for him to properly integrate into the side, he’s now starting to offer a major attacking threat on the wing with his speed and directness.

On the back of his performance against Wolves, things can only get better for Gittens from here on, and the sky is the limit for him, given his ability and potential.
