Jaylen Brown explains reaction to viral hairspray video, livestream

BOSTON — Jaylen Brown went viral last Friday against the Knicks, though it wasn’t because of his play on the court. Instead, there was a video going around social media because Brown, after rubbing his head on OG Anunoby during a play, left a black mark on the white Knicks jersey.

Fans around the league theorized that it was a fake hairline and Brown used a spray to mask some lost hair. In response to the speculation, Brown decided to poke some fun at himself. During a livestream Tuesday night, he acknowledged the hair troubles while also jokingly blaming Boston.

Brown, after the Celtics beat the Cavaliers on Wednesday, reacted to the viral video.

“It was my birthday (last Friday), so I was feeling great to be honest,” Brown said. “Got a Jaylen Brown Day in Boston, which was pretty awesome. I’m not sure how many athletes have the privilege of having their own day. But that was my birthday, so it was a pretty good day for me. I just wanted to come out the next game and respond and get a win. Starting out the season 0-for-3, not ideal, so that was more on my mind than anything, just losing basketball games.”

Most NBA fans found Brown’s reaction and livestream endearing, making fun of himself for a potentially embarrassing moment. Brown left LeBron James a voicemail during the livestream Tuesday, asking if he should go to Turkey, which is famous for hair transplants. So a lot of content came about from the viral video.

Regardless, it was a fun side quest for Brown, who’s been more active in the streaming space in recent weeks. During Celtics media day, he invited actor Bill Nye to be around the practice facility as part of his livestream. They performed some science experiments live, getting some help from Derrick White. Brown noted that his recent Twitch streams and other projects have been ways for him to connect to fans.

“I feel like I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I’m at peace, and I feel like I can express more of myself to the world, in a sense where I just haven’t opened up at all over the last five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 years,” Brown said during media day. “So just starting that journey. I started maybe a year ago, doing some different things, designing, just expressing myself more creatively. But more so just showing the world who Jaylen Brown really is.”
