Malen decision, Guessand returns: Aston Villa starting XI vs Liverpool predicted

Unai Emery has a few selection dilemmas ahead of facing Liverpool at Anfield

Aston Villa head to Liverpool this weekend targeting their first win at Anfield in 13 years.

Arne Slot’s Reds come into the game having lost six of their last seven matches, including their last two in a row, although wholesale changes were made for their midweek Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

Villa, meanwhile, have won their last four league games - against Fulham, Burnley, Tottenham and Manchester City - claiming victories in six of their last seven matches across all competitions.

However, Villa have won just one of their 30 Premier League away games against reigning champions, that victory coming in a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 2009.

Opponents Liverpool will be desperate to avoid losing five consecutive league matches for the first time since September 1953. They are also the first side in English top-flight history to win their first five matches of a season and then lose each of their next four.

Slot is hopeful that Ryan Gravenberch will be able to return from an ankle injury, but Alexander Isak could remain sidelined due to a groin problem.

For Villa, Emi Martínez is expected to continue in goal, possibly behind a defence of Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and Lucas Digne.

Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana should operate in the double pivot. Emi Buendía remains sidelined, while Harvey Elliott is unavailable as he cannot feature against his parent club while on loan at Villa.

Evann Guessand, John McGinn and Morgan Rogers could support Ollie Watkins in attack, with Donyell Malen and Jadon Sancho also available as options for Unai Emery.

Villa predicted XI: Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Kamara, Onana; Guessand, McGinn, Rogers; Watkins.
