NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore announced that rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will start Sunday, replacing Spencer Rattler.

Moore said both quarterbacks were informed of the decision Tuesday and that the team is “really excited about this opportunity” for Shough.
“He’s been preparing each and every week as if he was the starter,” Moore said. “I feel like he’s ready to go. This will be his first experience starting and going through that full process, and we’re excited about it.”
Moore praised Rattler’s performance and professionalism, saying the he “has proven that he can win games in this league” and that both young quarterbacks “are players we feel really good about.”
Coach Moore said the move was made to spark more consistency from the offense.

“Offensively, we’ve got to find a little bit more success and a little more consistency,” Moore said. “That doesn’t only have to do with Spencer — that has to do with everyone associated with the offense.”
Rattler will serve as the backup and continue to help Shough prepare.
“The goal is to let Tyler play and get going,” Moore said. “Spencer knows his role is to be the backup, and he did an excellent job today running the scout team.”
Moore said Shough earned the opportunity with steady progress since training camp.
“He’s taken steps in different areas that he felt he could grow in,” Moore said. “He handled the situation last Sunday well, hopping in there with very limited reps, and gave us a chance.”
The coach said he and Shough will work closely throughout the week to finalize a game plan that fits the quarterback’s comfort level.

“An important aspect of this is our communication,” Moore said. “It’ll be an ongoing process as we build toward Sunday.”
Moore emphasized that the team is not planning to rotate quarterbacks.
“We’re not doing this back-and-forth thing,” Moore said. “Tyler’s in there, he’s ready to go. The plan is to let him have success and navigate what he has to navigate.”
Moore said his expectations for Shough are straightforward.
“Operate at a high level, take command of the offense, protect the football and give us a chance to win,” he said.
Moore added that while Shough will face first-time challenges, he believes the quarterback’s patience and preparation have positioned him well.
“He’s been able to sit, process and grow individually,” Moore said. “He’s going to go out there and play well.”
