'Magnificent': Craig Bellamy urged to find out if Leeds star can play for Wales

Craig Bellamy has been urged to investigate whether Leeds United midfielder Sean Longstaff can play for Wales to exploit his deadly combination with Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon is enjoying the most prolific season of his career to date, having scored his third goal for club and country in the 2-1 win over West Ham.

All three of those goals have come from corners, with new Leeds signing Sean Longstaff providing the cross for his two Premier League goals.

Longstaff has enjoyed a strong start to life at Leeds, slotting into the right side of the trio of central midfielders preferred by Daniel Farke.

Now, Rodon’s international boss, Craig Bellamy, has been told he should try to find out if Longstaff has any Welsh heritage to help him exploit this developing connection at international level.

Craig Bellamy urged to pursue Leeds United star for Wales

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road Podcast, journalist Graham Smyth praised the growing influence of the Longstaff-Rodon partnership under Farke.

According to Smyth, if he were in charge of the Welsh national side, he would be looking to see if the midfielder qualified on heritage grounds to get the best out of Rodon for the national team.

“If I were Craig Bellamy, I would be digging deep into Sean Longstaff’s heritage. He hasn’t played for England, has he?” Smyth said. “What a combination.

“The Longstaff-Rodon combination is magnificent. I feel a little bit aggrieved that we were denied it for so long. I don’t know why it was not a thing to begin with, but it suddenly became a thing.”

He added, “It is really fun to see Leeds scoring from corners and being dangerous from corners. Long may that combination continue.”

How many chances has Sean Longstaff created for Joe Rodon?

Sean Longstaff has the most goal contributions for Leeds this season, with one goal and two assists, and both of those assists were for Rodon.

According to Opta’s Jonny Cooper, posting on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), Longstaff has created a total of seven chances for Rodon in the Premier League this season.

To highlight the impressive growth of the combination, this is the joint-most from one player to another in the entire division.

With Leeds looking to end a 16-year run without a win in Brighton, this combination could prove crucial again at the weekend.
