Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday.
Williams was arrested after a Transportation Security Administration agent noticed a “black container containing a green leafy substance” in his suitcase, according to an incident report, per The Athletic. He was found with 1.5 ounces of marijuana in his luggage, which he admitted to and said his manager packed for him.
While the NBA doesn’t prohibit players from using marijuana, recreational marijuana remains illegal in Texas. However, Williams was charged with only a misdemeanor since he had less than 2 ounces of marijuana in his possession at the time of his arrest.
Under Texas law, possession of 2 oz or less of marijuana can result in a maximum punishment of 180 days in jail and/or a $2,000 fine, according to NORML, a national marijuana advocacy group.
Williams apologized for the incident prior to the Mavs game against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.
“I can’t really go into further detail. I just want to apologize for just being a distraction,” Williams said. “Especially when you’re 0-2 … it wasn’t an ideal time at all. I want to take full accountability.”
Williams is in his fourth NBA season, including his rookie season with the Portland Trail Blazers and the last three with Dallas. The reserve guard scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, reeled in seven rebounds and dished two assists in the Mavs’ 107-105 win over the Pacers.
