Who impressed us as Saints earned a draw with Real Madrid at St Mary’s?

Abdul Okunola's late equaliser was a reward for their gritty defensive performance in the second half against a Real Madrid side that competes in Spain's third tier.

Thiago Pitarch, who was sitting on the bench against Juventus eight days ago, thought he had scored the winner at St Mary's when he fired in from the edge of the box.

But this Saints side, who are being prepped for senior football, were unwilling to allow that to be the case and ended the game with a strong resurgence.

We have picked out just three of the players who impressed us in the Premier League International Cup...

### Tommy Dobson-Ventura

With several eyes on record-breaking goalscorer Nick Oyekunle, Saints had another player in their starting lineup who wrote himself into the history books last season.

While striker Oyekunle has scored the most goals in U18 Premier League history, defender Tommy Dobson-Ventura has made the most appearances in the division.

Still only 18, he has now stepped up to the under-21 side and delivered a strong defensive performance against a dominant Real Madrid.

He produced a key block in the first half to keep the Spanish side at bay and marshalled the defence in the second half, helping keep the score at just 1-0.

It was his through ball for Baylee Dipepa that acted as the starting point for Southampton's late resurgence in front of the Northam End.

### Cam Bragg

Just a few days removed from his bittersweet Championship debut, Cam Bragg was back at his best in the Saints under-21s midfield.

It was his pinpoint corner that found the head of Gavin Bazunu late on, and the 20 year old also made a number of defensive interventions to keep Saints alive.

One of those was a last-ditch tackle inside the box after Romeo Akachukwu's loose pass handed possession to Real Madrid on the edge of the box.

Bragg has been a long-standing player in the Saints midfield and demonstrated his leadership skills as Saints clung on long enough to snatch the draw.

A neat passer of the ball and a determined player when nibbling at tackles, Bragg looks destined for a solid career as a professional, whether that is at Saints or elsewhere.

### Abdul Okunola

Bazunu got all of the adulation following Southampton's equaliser, but they would not have scored had Okunola not been there to gobble up the rebound.

The 18 year old, who signed his first professional contract in the summer, has recently made the step up to under-21s football, and appears to be adapting well.

Alongside other impressive defensive performances, Okunola also helped keep Saints in the game with excellent defending under heavy pressure from Real Madrid.

The rangy defender also looks neat on the ball, something that is highly sought after in modern football.

The former Chelsea academy talent has featured in all seven Premier League 2 games for Saints this season. This was his first goal at under-21 level.
