Can he do it? Alan Pardew sets goal target for Nick Woltemade at Newcastle United

Nick Woltemade already has six goals for Newcastle United in his first 11 appearances.

Alan Pardew has backed Nick Woltemade to score 20 goals for Newcastle United this season.

November is upon us this weekend and the German already has six for the campaign. Woltemade has hit the ground running since arriving for a club-record £69million in August.

Much of the summer transfer window centred around Alexander Isak and his eventual move to Liverpool. However, with the Swede struggling, Woltemade has quickly become the new talking point in the Premier League.

Nick Woltemade scores again

Woltemade netted a header early in the second half to give Tottenham Hotspur an uphill task last night. This was his third aerial goal since joining, with the 23-year-old using the height advantage well despite being renowned for his technical ability.

Newcastle comfortably held on to beat Spurs 2-0 and coast into the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Another home tie awaits against Fulham in December as confidence grows that the Magpies can retain their title.

Alan Pardew sets Nick Woltemade target

Speaking to talkSPORT, former Newcastle manager Pardew tipped the £69million man to reach the 20-goal mark. He said: “When I looked at that fixture, obviously I know Newcastle fans. I know the stadium very, very well. They're the holders of the competition. I knew that was going to be a tough call (for Tottenham) going there.

“I fancied Newcastle to win that and it didn't disappoint me. I wish I could have paid 70 million for a striker. I love him and obviously up at Newcastle they love him. He's bought into the crowd and the environment. He's settled in lovely and he scored goals.

“That penalty he took two weeks ago where he just walked up and smashed it in the top corner just shows the confidence the boy has. I think he'll start for Germany at the World Cup.

“He'll have that big a season at Newcastle. Newcastle love crosses. Eddie has always loved crosses. He's gonna have a nice supply of ammunition to get goals and I think he will. I think he'll end up with 20 goals.”

Alan Pardew on Alexander Isak comparison

When asked about the difference between Woltemade and Isak, Pardew added: “Both are very good off crosses,” Pardew added. “Whether you're getting behind the defence and putting fast crosses in or you're coming on the inside and putting them to the far post, which are the two main routes of crosses in the Premier League.

“Newcastle are probably one of the best teams in the division at doing that and they sustain pressure. After a cross has gone in (and) it comes out (again), they win it back and start another attack. That constant threat of attacking play makes them a real force in the Premier League and that's why I think Newcastle have a great (of qualifying for the) Champions League again.”
