Swansea City 1 Manchester City 3: match reportCity comeback from a goal down to see off Swansea and advance into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Manchester City have beaten Swansea City 3-1 in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with goals from Doku, Marmoush, and Cherki. The match was on the back of a 1-0 defeat at the weekend to Aston Villa, which the Blues were looking to bounce back from immediately. The lineup was much different to the previous one. Trafford started in goal. Khusanov returned from injury and was accompanied by Lewis, Ake, and Ait-Nouri in the back line. Gonzalez, Cherki, and Mukasa were in the midfield with Bobb, Doku, and Marmoush in attack.
City initially started the game on the back foot and in fact, struggled for possession in the opening 15 minutes. Swansea pressed well and put the City defence under pressure and this eventually paid off for them. In the 12th minute, Goncalo Franco received the ball on the edge of the box and chipped the ball from distance straight into the top right corner to give the home side a shock lead against the Blues with some finish. Momentum immediately shifted after this, with Swansea now reverting to a defensive style of play to try and keep City out for as long as possible.
For a while this worked and the Blues were left frustrated attempting to find an equaliser, with Cherki hitting the post around the half hour mark. Swansea’s resistance would not last though and just before half time, Doku got past his man and fired a shot that deflected off the Swansea defender to bring City level. Despite losing their lead, Swansea still held firm for a good portion of the second half, keeping the Blues out hoping to catch them on the counter. City finally went into the lead with a strike from Marmoush into the roof of the net following a brilliant pass in from Cherki. The Blues could finally feel some relief.
Swansea became more open in attempt to find a late equaliser but by this point, City held firm control and domination of the game and would add one more goal to their tally to prove this. In the 93rd minute, Gvardiol ran up the pitch and pass the ball in towards Cherki who dribbled and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net to cap off a comfortable 2 goal victory for City.
The result means City are into their first League Cup quarter-final since the 2022/23 season. More importantly for now however, would be the standout performance of Rayan Cherki, who had a goal and an assist to show from the match and was everywhere on the evening. City fans will be hoping to see more of him in the coming games, should his slight knock at the end not be too serious. City will face Bournemouth at home this Sunday and will hope to return to winning ways in the Premier League.
