This adjustment also solves a major early-season issue. The run game has finally exploded. The Eagles racked up a season-high 276 rushing yards in the Week 8 rematch against the Giants. Saquon Barkley’s 65-yard touchdown dash set the tone early on. This ground assault, directly fueled by the under-center looks, makes Jalen Hurts even more dangerous. Play-action fakes are far more convincing from this alignment.
Hurts himself is embracing the change. “I enjoy being under center and being able to complement things within our run game and find a flow,”the quarterback remarked after the Giants game. He understands it’s not about the formation itself, but the strategic advantage it creates. “It’s about what you’re doing when you’re under center. How we’re leveraging what we do.” This football IQ is what allows such a mid-season pivot to succeed.
Of course, this evolution required patience. Hurts is on his sixth play caller in as many seasons. He acknowledged the necessary growth period, saying it takes “a culmination of time, experiences together.” Now, that chemistry with Patullo is clearly clicking.
