Philadelphia 76ers assign former Auburn All-American to G League

The Philadelphia 76ers assigned Johni Broome to the Delaware Blue Coats on Wednesday.

A second-round pick in the NBA Draft on June 27, the former Auburn All-American did not play in the 76ers’ first four games of the 2025-26 season.

The NBA Gatorade League affiliate of Philadelphia, the Blue Coats opened training camp on Tuesday as they work toward their season-opening game on Nov. 8 against the Westchester Knicks.

Broome dressed for all of Philadelphia’s games so far this season but had not played.

Broome got a taste of the NBA game with the 76ers in summer-league play and the preseason.

Broome averaged 9.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocked shots in three Salt Lake City Summer League games. Then at the NBA 2K26 Summer League, Broome averaged 13.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in four games in Las Vegas.

In three preseason games, Broome had 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.

The first appearance of the season for former Mountain Brook High School star Trendon Watford after a hamstring injury in Philadelphia’s 139-134 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night added another player to the 76ers’ power forward/center options. While it waits for injured All-Star Paul George to join former NBA MVP Joel Embiid in the lineup, Philadelphia has used Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond, Adem Bona and Jabari Walker in the four and five spots.

The Blue Coats play their home games at Chase Field House in Wilmington, Delaware.

During the 2024-25 college basketball season, Broome’s accolades included consensus first-team All-American, the SEC Player of the Year Award, the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player Award, The Sporting News National Player of the Year Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award as he helped Auburn reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In his final season at Auburn, Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 blocked shots in 36 games. He led the SEC in rebounds and blocked shots. His 389 rebounds set a school single-season record, and Broome left the Tigers ranked second in rebounds, third in blocked shots and eighth in points in Auburn history.
