EFL Cup — Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham — Match Report: Magpies Make Carabao Home

Newcastle United advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals with a convincing 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park, continuing their strong cup form under Eddie Howe.

Fabian Schar opened the scoring in the 24th minute, rising to head home Sandro Tonali’s corner as Tottenham’s zonal marking fell apart. The visitors protested that Djed Spence was still tying his laces when the corner was taken, but the referee waved play on.

Schar, making his first start since a concussion in September, impressed alongside Malick Thiaw as Newcastle’s reshuffled defense bagged another clean sheet.

Tottenham threatened briefly through Brennan Johnson and Lucas Bergvall, but struggled to test Aaron Ramsdale, who started in place of Nick Pope.

Newcastle were sharper and more disciplined throughout, with Tonali handling the midfield and full-backs Dan Burn and Emil Krafth joining attacks to overload the flanks.

The Magpies doubled their lead five minutes into the second half. Joe Willock’s floated cross caught Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in two minds, allowing Nick Woltemade to head the ball in from close range for his sixth goal in nine starts.

The goal extended the German striker’s remarkable scoring run and maintained Newcastle’s unbeaten streak in the competition tracking back to last season’s title-winning campaign.

Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon both went close late on as Newcastle controlled the closing stages.

Howe’s side have now reached the Carabao Cup quarterfinals for a fourth consecutive year, eliminating yet another member of the Premier League’s top six in the process.

“Really pleased with the performance,” Howe said. “We showed good balance and intensity. The lads who came in were excellent, especially Sandro and Fabian.”

With eight clean sheets in their last 14 games across all competitions, Newcastle look determined to defend their domestic crown in the next round, set for a matchup against Fulham in the middle of December.

For now, the Magpies will visit West Ham on Sunday for another Premier League matchup.
