Denton called up

West Ham United defender Anouk Denton has earned her first-ever senior England call-up, joining the Lionesses squad ahead of their friendly against Australia on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old full-back, who has been an ever-present for the Hammers in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season, was initially with the England Under 23s setup, where she featured alongside teammate Sarah Brasero in a 1-1 draw with Germany on Thursday.

However Denton’s impressive performances have now been rewarded with a promotion to Sarina Wiegman’s senior squad for the final match of the international window.

Having previously represented her country at Under 17 and Under 19 level, Denton made her debut for the Under 23s in September 2023 and has since become a consistent figure in Emma Coates’ side.

Her progress at both club and international level, coupled with her nomination for Young Player of the Year at last season’s Women’s Football Awards, has seen her catch the attention of Wiegman, the coach who has guided England to consecutive UEFA Women’s European Championship titles.

Denton could make her senior debut under the lights at Pride Park in Derby, with kick-off set for 7pm GMT. If selected, she would become just the third West Ham player in history to represent the Lionesses, following in the footsteps of Claire Lacey and Rachel Daly.

England will face a familiar opponent in Katrina Gorry’s Australia, who defeated Wales 2-1 in Cardiff at the weekend — a game that also featured fellow Hammer Ffion Morgan. Denton and Gorry are among 19 West Ham players expected to be in action on Tuesday evening, rounding off what has been a remarkable international break for the Club.
