Exclusive: The likelihood of Everton recalling Harrison Armstrong from Preston loan

Everton are being treated to some impressive displays from Harrison Armstrong at Preston North End, with a potential recall on the cards.

Following a strong summer from Armstrong, the Toffees were left with a big decision as to what would be the best next step for their 18-year-old midfielder.

Armstrong was keen to impress David Moyes during the pre-season after enjoying his spell at Derby County last season.

Moyes did, however, choose to send his young prospect out on loan to his former club, Preston.

Another interesting decision lies ahead of Everton, with the club holding the opportunity to recall Armstrong back to Merseyside in January.

Everton News’ transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey has discussed the likelihood of Armstrong returning in the New Year.

Whether Everton will recall Harrison Armstrong from Preston

Just weeks into his loan stint, Armstrong has admitted he’s loving life at Preston under manager Paul Heckingbottom.

The 18-year-old has become somewhat of a permanent fixture in the Preston side on the back of his promising start to the Championship campaign.

Speaking to Everton News, Bailey has shared caution over the possibility of Everton withdrawing the youngster from what is proving a very successful loan.

“They’ll assess it. Obviously, they’re looking at Armstrong every week. I was personally surprised to see him go out. I thought he could offer something now,” Bailey told Everton News.

“By the time it comes to January, he’ll have another dozen first team games under his belt. So that’ll do him the world of good.

“I think it’s something they will assess come January and see where they are and if they need him. I think it’s an avenue they will look at for sure.

“That decision hasn’t been made yet. And I think, in an ideal world, they’d probably like him to see out the season with Preston.”

Just last week, Moyes watched Armstrong in action at Preston during their Championship game against Birmingham City.

Idrissa Gana Gueye may be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in December, but the long-term development of Armstrong will have to be top of the agenda when making the decision.

Armstrong is guaranteed minutes at Preston

There will be a lot under consideration when it comes to where Armstrong’s future lies beyond January.

Preston fans are blown away by Armstrong’s performances and that is being reflected in his regular minutes under Heckingbottom.

As long as there are no injury issues, it is hard to see how Armstrong will find himself out of the Preston starting XI.

If Armstrong was to return to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, then it would have to be with the intention for him to play regular minutes.

Gueye’s performances are concerning some Everton fans despite cementing his spot in the side over recent years.

Clearly, Armstrong has a bright future ahead of him, but he is also thriving playing regular football in the second tier.
