Ross Wilson’s to-do list at Newcastle United has increased after Fabian Schar gave the green light to a new contract.
Schar is out of contract at Newcastle United in the summer of 2026 but remains a key part of Eddie Howe’s side this season.
Despite losing his place to Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw in recent weeks, Schar has still made eight appearances.
The veteran headed in Newcastle’s opener in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham and, crucially, also defended well throughout.
As good as Thiaw and Botman have been this season, Howe needs players like Schar in the Newcastle United squad. The fixture schedule is relentless and, hopefully, next season’s will be too.
With that in mind, sporting director Wilson should be aiming to strike an agreement with Schar as quickly as possible.

Fabian Schar confirms he’s open to a new Newcastle United contract
Schar was speaking to The Chronicle after the game against Spurs.
Naturally, he was asked about his long-term future at St James’ Park. Schar has made 238 appearances for Newcastle and, hopefully, that tally continues to rise even beyond this season.

The defender revealed that talks over a potential new deal were on the horizon and that he would be open to extending his stay at the club.
“I have said before I feel at home here,” he said.
“I know in football you never know what happens and it goes quick. If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course.
“We need to see what the situation is and what happens in the next few weeks.
“I will just try to show what I can do with my quality, and the rest we will see.”
Ross Wilson cannot overlook Fabian Schar amid imminent contract talks
Wilson has only recently been appointed as Newcastle’s sporting director but has plenty of work to do on the contracts front.
Indeed, Wilson wants to hold contract talks with Botman and Tino Livramento too.
Securing their long-term future is hugely important. Still, Schar is not to be overlooked just because he’s closer towards the end of his career.
Teams competing in Europe need as big a squad as possible and it’s hard to picture Newcastle replacing a fine rotational option in Schar with a player as good without breaking the bank.
