Blow for Tottenham as Antonio Conte favourite targets Serie A stay

Tottenham Hotspur-linked midfielder Scott McTominay has no intentions of leaving Napoli in 2026

Despite their early exit from the Carabao Cup, Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying a strong start to the season under Thomas Frank. They currently sit third in the Premier League after nine fixtures, above the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Thomas Frank has already improved Spurs in different ways in quite a short period. Tottenham have been compact and disciplined in midfield this season, unlike last term under Ange Postecoglou where opposition found it extremely easy to bypass it. Due to almost a non-existing midfield, their defence came under severe pressure and conceded almost in every single game.

The double pivot of Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha have brought stability and balance to the team, whilst providing protection to the back four. While Bentancur and Palhinha’s presence have brought physicality and balance, creativity has been compromised from deep as Spurs continue to struggle to unlock teams.

As a result, Spurs are in the hunt for a box-to-box midfielder with goalscoring ability. Recent reports suggest Napoli’s Scott McTominay has emerged as a target for Thomas Frank’s club.

Tottenham want to bring back Scott McTominay to the Premier League

Scott McTominay wants to continue at Napoli

Scott McTominay has impressed in Naples since joining from Manchester United for £30 million last summer, landing the Serie A title in his first season and becoming a cult hero. The Scotland international’s debut season in Italy saw him reborn under Antonio Conte. The midfielder’s 12 goals in the league were instrumental for Napoli clinching the Serie A title, a contribution so big he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and even earned a Ballon d’Or nomination.

After years of being misprofiled at Manchester United, McTominay has finally found a perfect home in Naples. Now, his links to Tottenham have been dismissed. As revealed by Sky Sport Italia, the 28-year-old’s entourage has denied any possible rumours of him returning to England.

“Scott loves the city, the club and the fans. He feels really good here,” a source close to the player told Sky Sport.

Despite being linked with a return to the Premier League, the Scot has no intention of leaving Napoli in the short term. In fact, a contract extension is a possibility in the coming months. Antonio Conte and Napoli’s management appreciate McTominay’s classic attitude and influence- on and off the pitch.

Tottenham suffer blow in pursuit of Napoli cult hero Scott McTominay

Blow for Spurs?

McTominay is committed to the Napoli project and does not look like leaving the club soon. He has settled well in Italy and perhaps wants to enjoy the best years of his career there. For now, the goalscoring midfielder has no interest in returning to the Premier League, which should come as a big blow for Tottenham.

The Lilywhites do not stand chance of signing the ex-Man United star in 2026 given his long-term commitment to Napoli. While the current crop of players at White Hart Lane still have an opportunity to impress the gaffer until January, at least, it appears increasingly likely that the club bosses will move decisively for a new midfielder to partner Palhinha in the engine room.
