West Ham United face a serious test this weekend as Sven Botman looks set to return to the [Newcastle United](https://www.claretandhugh.info/newcastle-united-bio/) starting XI ahead of their Premier League clash at the [London Stadium](https://www.claretandhugh.info/london-stadium-bio/).
The Dutch centre-back was forced off during Newcastle’s draw with Fulham after taking a knock from Sasa Lukic, sparking fears of a concussion. Toon, manager Eddie Howe quickly ruled out anything serious, and Botman was back in the squad for their midweek Carabao Cup win over Spurs — albeit as an unused substitute.
Having started Newcastle’s 3-0 win against Benfica, the defender is expected to slot straight back into the first team when the Magpies visit East London.
As for ourselves, having been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Wolves in humbling fashion weshould, in theory, have a fresher squad for Sunday’s game. But this clash will be anything but straightforward for Nuno Espirito Santo, who has struggled to find a coherent team in the last two games.
While the Hammers may have home advantage, Newcastle’s strength in depth is frightening. Howe rested several first-team players for the midweek cup tie and still cruised past Spurs. With Botman returning and key figures like Bruno Guimarães and Gordon expected to feature, the Magpies arrive in formidable shape. Let’s be fair here, even without Botman, the Toons reserve central defenders would march into West Ham’s backline.
West Ham will need to be at their absolute best to get anything from this game. Nuno’s tactical approach and selections will be under the microscope again, especially in midfield.
