She has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink-driving.

The 45-year-old denied drink driving, while no plea was entered for dangerous driving.

Chiedozie was about to change a car tyre on the hard shoulder on February 1 when the injury occurred.

The 31-year-old was returning home from training with Southern League club Bashley when he pulled over on the M27 to inspect his car.

Chiedozie was playing on the south coast, where he’s spent most of his career.

Local news outlet the Southern Daily Echo report that he was put into an induced coma after the crash and has since detailed his recovery as an amputee on social media.

Speaking to the outlet months after the crash, he said: "I think you just have to [stay positive], you just have to get on with it.

"If you stay too much thinking of what happened and the past, I don't think it helps with the recovery and being able to get as close to normal as before, going forward.”

Speaking about his new prosthetic leg, he said: “I’m getting used to getting up on my feet and using it again.”

Things could have been worse for Chiedozie as he suffered multiple fractures in his other leg, but surgeons were able to save it.

He told the BBC in July: “In my left leg I had an open fracture in the femur so they put a rod through that and I had an open fracture in the fibula and tibia but luckily they were able to keep the leg otherwise it could’ve been even worse.”

Recalling his memory of the accident, he said: “I got a flat tyre and then pulled over onto the hard shoulder.

“The next thing I remember was waking up two weeks later in the hospital not knowing what had happened.”

The former Cambridge United striker also said he learned to look at his situation differently after the tragic death of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota who was killed in a car accident five months after Chiedozie’s crash.

“It’s hard to process, especially when you see what happened to Diogo Jota,” he said. “It definitely puts things in perspective.

“You’re happy and you’re blessed to be here, but at the same time you have been put through a serious injury.

“You can’t dwell on it, I don’t think about the ‘what ifs’ because it doesn’t change anything, it’s happened.”

Shortly after the February crash a GoFundMe page was opened to aid Chiedozie’s recovery and it not only drew support from Bashley FC but the wider football community.

Close to £35,000 was raised, and the former forward responded: “I just want to say thank you to all of them.

“Thank you for the messages, it means a lot, it means everything. It’s just nice knowing people care.

“The only goal I had from the hospital was to walk into Bashley again so everything's come together at the right time.”

The highest level Chiedozie played at was League Two, although he did feature in a pre-season friendly against sporting giants Real Madrid while breaking through at Bournemouth.
