Several players have failed to come through for the Jacksonville Jaguars this season. One of them is Cam Little, who had a stellar rookie season but has been underwhelming in Year 2. But despite his struggles, head coach Liam Coen said the Jags aren't giving up on the sophomore kicker.
Similarly, special teams coach Heath Farwell expressed confidence that Little will bounce back after the team's much-needed BYE.
Heath Farwell says the Jaguars are confident in Cam Little despite his struggles
"Yeah, I mean, it's not his best. Obviously. Would love to have some of those kicks back. I think the cool part we love him here, we love what he's done," Farwell said when asked about Little's struggles this season (0:05 mark). "He's saved us a million times over the years, and we get an opportunity, the BYE week came at a perfect time for him, for me, for everybody, all our players and coaches, to kind of reset, get back to what you do. Cam strikes the ball as good as anybody in the league."
Farwell continued, "And so to get back to that, he was able to go home to his hometown in Oklahoma City and kick on his little goal post. And he was able to kind of reach back and kind of do the things he does. And we've had some great conversations. It's been really, really good. This is part of his process as a young kicker, a young specialist. You hate to see it happen kind of this little rough patch a little bit, but this is part of it."
"I told him you're going to have three or four of these, probably over your course of your 15-year career. So this is how we got to manage it. This is how we got to work through it. And we're going to work through it with them. And so it's a cool time for them to kind of work through it with the Bye week. Get extra time to do it, and I'm excited. I'm fired up to see him, to see him kick on Sunday. It's gonna be really cool to kind of see where he's come, and like I said, we love him to death."
Later in the exchange, Farwell told the press corps that Little hasn't changed anything in his technique, adding that the sophomore kicker has a clean slate after the BYE. So far this season, he is 10-of-15. On top of that, he's missed an extra-point attempt.
Cam Little must come through for the Jaguars in the 2nd half
Cam Little has already failed four field goals this season after failing just two last year. His latest two came in the losses to the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams. However, Liam Coen says the team isn't planning to bring in competition. This is a clear vote of confidence in the former Oklahoma Sooner. All things considered, it's easy to see why the Jaguars aren't pulling the plug on him.
As Heath Farwell noted, players will go through rough stretches at some point of their careers. In Little's case, it's taking place in his second NFL season.
Now, Cam Little needs to repay the Jaguars' trust. If he does, there will no longer be chatter about replacing him or bringing in competition. His first chance will come against the Las Vegas Raiders.
