'It’s embarrassing' - Enzo Maresca publicly slams Chelsea player

Chelsea might have won the game against Wolves to book their place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, but Enzo Maresca clearly was not happy with what he saw from his side in the second half of the game. And it is easy to understand why. The majority of the support had a very similar view of the game as well.

Over the last several years, [Chelsea](https://theprideoflondon.com/embarrassing-unhappy-chelsea-fans-react-despite-win-vs-wolves) have had their complete focus on signing talented youngsters, completely overlooking the need for experience. So, one cannot be shocked that a team full of young players is continuously repeating the same mistakes.

The defending was once again awful. You cannot concede three goals in one half against the worst team in the Premier League.

But perhaps equally worrying for Chelsea will be their poor disciplinary record. Over the last nine games, they have picked up six red cards. That is a number that does not even make sense. If a club picks that up over the course of a season, serious question marks would be raised about their lack of discipline.

A lot has been made about the good that Liam Delap's return to fitness could do for Chelsea. Well, he made his on-field comeback by coming on as a substitute against Wolves and then swiftly picking up a couple of yellow cards to be sent off when the Blues were trying to somehow hold on to their 3-2 lead. Fortunately, it did not prove to be result-altering but it just goes on to show how poor the decision-making of some of these players is.

Maresca did not sound happy after the game either. As reported by [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6761405/2025/10/29/enzo-maresca-liam-delap-red-card/), he said when asked if Chelsea’s red card tally is now becoming an embarrassment:

> "Yes, it’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like today. Because it’s two yellow cards in five minutes, 10 minutes, I don’t know, seven minutes. Both I think we can avoid that. So it’s not good."

Maresca also revealed that he had warned Delap about the possibility of a red card after he picked up his first yellow:

> "Yes, after the yellow card I told him four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player that when he’s inside the pitch probably he’ll be playing the game for himself and he struggles to realise and to listen around him."

If you want to compete with the best, talent is not just enough. You need to be mature about your decisions on the pitch. A lot of Chelsea's players are so clearly lacking that at the moment. This is why you need to balance youth and experience when building a squad.
