Why standing still might be Jerry Jones’ smartest trade deadline move

My advice to Jerry Jones goes against the traditional wisdom of the hour from various football pundits. If I were Jones, I’d resist the temptation to acquire a player before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

On one hand, there’s not a singular player available who can alter the reality of that side of the ball. Every position group including defensive line, linebackers, and secondary needs an upgrade. The best play is to hold firm, utilize April’s draft collateral, and leverage your pair of first-round selections. Sacrifice the moment for the future.

Prospects like Keldrick Faulk or Cashius Howell could immediately address the edge concern, while Caleb Downs would anchor the secondary for years to come. And if fate deals you a favorable hand, you could even inherit an additional first-rounder from the Micah Meltdown clause in 2027.

But assuming patience isn’t on the table, then buck the trend entirely. Dallas can make a deal for five-time Pro Bowler Alvin Kamara, who’s wasting away in New Orleans. Kamara hasn’t found the end zone since Week 1, and it’s doubtful he’ll ever find it again as a Saint. Why not adopt a philosophy of simply outscoring the opposition each week? Treat it like a track meet until reinforcements arrive in subsequent seasons.

At the 2018 deadline, Dallas struck gold by acquiring Amari Cooper, an offensive spark who lifted the team to an NFC crown and beyond. Why not go the other way again and balance out Dak’s attack with twenty weekly touches to Kamara?

With a victory on Monday night, the [Cowboys](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/dallas-cowboys) could firmly re-enter the wildcard picture. The trade deadline will hit roughly sixteen hours later. If that scenario unfolds, can Jerry bite the bullet and either wait until draft night, or go against the grain and bolster the offense?

Those are the options from my perspective.
