Former Alabama prep, Troy standout wins NFL monthly award

New England Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones is the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for October.

The former Enterprise High School and Troy standout totaled 20 tackles, eight passes defensed, four tackles for loss, two interceptions and a sack as the Patriots won their four October game. Jones had a tackle for loss and at least one pass defensed in each of New England’s four games.

Jones is in his fourth season with the Patriots since joining the team in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He earned All-Pro recognition as a punt returner in his rookie season.

Jones leads the NFL with a 21.6-yard punt-return average this season and was the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week Award winner for Week 4 of the 2025 campaign.

On Tuesday, Jones signed a three-year contract extension with the Patriots worth a reported $36 million.

The NFL’s other Player of the Month award-winners for October included Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, NFC Offensive; Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, AFC Offensive; Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons, NFC Defensive; San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro, NFC Special Teams; and Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz, AFC Special Teams.

At Enterprise, Jones earned ASWA first-team All-State honors in 2016, when he intercepted five passes, returned three punts, one kickoff and one fumble recovery for touchdowns and caught a TD pass.

Jones played two seasons at Troy. He was the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 2017, when he returned three kickoffs for touchdowns.

In the second of his two seasons at Houston, Jones earned consensus All-American recognition at all-purpose/return specialist and was selected a first-team All-American at cornerback by The Associated Press in 2021.
