Newcastle United set to make major call on Bruno Guimaraes future

Bruno Guimaraes will have two years remaining on his Newcastle United contract come the end of the season.

Newcastle United are reportedly set to prepare contract negotiations for captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Big changes at boardroom level have seen David Hopkinson arrive as CEO and Ross Wilson as sporting director in recent weeks. Hopkinson is understood to be conducting a 100-day review of the club to gather his bearings at St James’ Park.

As for Wilson, player contracts have been top of the agenda, with news emerging last week that Sandro Tonali - previously thought to be approaching precarious territory - is effectively tied down until 2030. The Italian penned a “secret” extension during his 10-month lay-off for breaching betting regulations two years ago.

Bruno Guimaraes a top priority

A report in Brazilian outlet UOL earlier this month claimed Newcastle have already begun early discussions over Guimaraes’ future. Toon chiefs are relaxed on the midfielder’s situation, with speculation not as rife as it was before he signed his last deal.

Two years ago, Guimaraes agreed new terms until 2028, with a release clause inserted worth around £100million. That buyout option has since expired and the midfielder has gone on to become club captain and synonymous with the current era at Newcastle.

The Magpies will still want to tie him down for longer as he approaches a crucial stage of his career. Guimaraes - who has made his happiness at Newcastle clear - turns 28 next month so is aware that the next deal he signs might be the most important.

Other pressing issues

Sven Botman and Tino Livramento are perhaps higher up the priority list for Wilson and the Newcastle board. In particular, the Dutchman will have just one year remaining come the end of the season.

Livramento also attracted interest from Manchester City in the summer and has developed into an England international under Eddie Howe. That is not to suggest Guimaraes will be taken for granted, but tying the defensive duo down has swiftly become a matter of urgency for the new sporting director.

Eddie Howe delegating contract duties

Earlier this month, Howe was keen to tell reporters that contract renewals fall under Wilson’s remit as sporting director. He said: “That’s one that’s waiting for Ross. These conversations will all be led by him. And of course I’m sure he’s all over that and looking into the contract length of all the players and then starting conversations accordingly.”
